Algorithm changes: MoneySupermarket woes show everyone’s at risk (unless you’re with Just Search)
It’s easy to imagine that only the little guys get hit by Google’s algorithm updates. After all, the internet giants out there have entire departments devoted to watching out for changes and making the necessary tweaks and preparations, don’t they?
That’s true. They have teams whose very raison d’être is to hold onto the top spot in their specialist areas, but that doesn’t mean they’re infallible. Picture the scene at MoneySupermarket.com this week when bosses noticed that a failure to adapt quickly enough saw algorithm changes related to search actually cause a dip in business!
“How could this happen?!” I hear you cry. Well, it just goes to show that even the savviest companies can fall foul of Google’s efforts to improve search in order to make it as natural as possible.
So what did the folks at MoneySupermarket have to say on the matter? This is the formal statement released by a spokesperson:
“Group trading in the second quarter was slower than the first quarter.
“This was mostly because of a lower rate of growth in the Insurance vertical, arising substantially following changes made by Google to its natural search algorithms, reducing our visitors and revenues from natural search in the month of June in the highly competitive insurance search area.
“As has happened in the past, now the algorithm changes have settled down we are working on regaining our positions in natural search in insurance.”
All in all, they seem to have taken it on the chin, even if such a dip is a little embarrassing for one of the online standard-bearers. The fact that the MoneySupermarket.com team are now beavering away to satisfy the new regulations is evidence of how Google is levelling out the playing field and, crucially, it demonstrates that nobody’s immune.
Fortunately, no such red faces in the Just Search offices! Our clients are basking in the wake of a positive response to the very algorithm changes that have caused such an issue for MoneySupermarket.com, buoyed by results like so many seabirds riding the thermals.
It all makes for a very peaceful image doesn’t it? Quite the antidote to the hair-pulling frenzy currently being experienced by those whose SEO campaigns are managed by less shrewd agencies than Just Search, if we do say so ourselves!
